In this essay i will be evaluating the short film the me and my crew produced, which is called 'Dollz'. I was given the role of the camera operator and being given this role i have learnt three important things during being in charge of he storyboard and the shot list for our movie. The first thing i have learned is that my position was an important role and it had to be done and that time is very limited. If we don't meet the deadline, everything falls behind and a lot of money would be lost. I successfully finished the storyboard in a way that the crew could easily follow and i was very meaningful because it was shot effectively. The only downfall about the storyboard is that it didn't contain he rule of thirds, which was and compulsive action to have within the storyboard. However i found a way to work around it and produce the rule of thirds on the screen of the camera. Apart from not having he rule of thirds the storyboard was clear on what directions was need to be done and straight forward therefore if someone didn't know anything about the production, they would understand it by just looking at the storyboard. The second thing i have learned is that the pre-production has to be perfectly finished in order to actually start the production work. For and example this includes collecting the props that we need, the permission plans because these things are better done before the production because you will have to wait for an email for you to know if you have permission to shoot on the premises and if you buy the props on the same day shooting, you would be loosing shooting time. The third thing i have realised is that as camera operator doing the storyboard and the shooting script is that no one can start shooting without them, therefore if the storyboard doesn't meet the deadline everything would fall behind because then we would have less time to shoot.
If there was a problem me and my crew were good at coming together and figuring out our next move to resolve the problem. An example of this is that at the last minute one of our locations got cancelled but we never gave up put all put our minds together and was able to think of a new location that we could use for our production on the same day.
At the start of out pre-production all the roles got divided in and each of us was given our own separate roles and the good thing is that everyone knew what their role contained.
Our shooting script was done at the time we was allowed to start shooting on the locations that we picked; after asking them if we could have permission to shoot on their property and we got all our locations secured. It was perfect how this happened because it made our shooting script more realistic and easier for us to work on. Also the script was detailed because it required the times n hours we would be shooting for and the location we were shooting in and materials and who was needed to present. Our shooting schedule had contingency plans in case we needed to re-shoot shots or add in any pick up shots. The only downfall is that the storyboard and the shot list wasn't done early enough therefore that kept us back a bit.
The storyboard i produced was detailed and it contained enough shots for the film to be one minute. However the storyboard had to have changes made to it because the idea changed and there was more details that needed adding. 95% of our shoot followed the storyboard but the remaining 5% didn't because we had to change our location and the time we changed our location we couldn't go back to the storyboard, which was under the pre-production planning and that deadline already passed.
The shot list was also my role as well and it contained relative information for an example the shot types and the shot list was also based on the shooting script, therefore it made it easier to complete because the shooting script was already finished. The good thing about the shooting script is that it helped us out on how we was going to structure the shots and whenever we was stuck; not knowing what shot to use next, we always referred back to the shot list. For and example we was at the train station and we wanted to take an establishing shot and extra pick up shots, but we didn't know hat shots to use for the pick up shots therefore we looked at the shot list and it gave us the shots we needed to use and the composition. Because we changed one of our locations near the end, we had to switch the shot list and improvise.
When we had to decide on what location we was going to use we had various of ideas, however some of the ideas would of been difficult for us to film i. With the location we picked it was still difficult filming because of the lighting and background noises. Successfully we got permission from each location we wanted that we can film on their property. Therefore it made it easier to shoot considering we never had a case where was kicked of the premises because we never had permission. we was aware about the noise factors that would occur, especially in the train station we knew that there was going to be a lot of background noise, therefore we made our script not have any dialogue and considering we never used the sound from the actual footage, the background noises were cut off and you can only hear the sound effects we added in ourselves along with the backing track we also added in ourselves. however we used some sound from the original footage to make our film sound more realistic. Also we had our own lighting kit, which we couldn't get at our first shoot, that is why our first shoot was bad because the lights in the office ruined it because it was to bright and it was meant to be low key lighting to make it look like a thriller, Therefore we had to re-shoot those particular shots.
The producer was in charge of everything. The person who had that role had to be the the most organised and reliable person because of the fact that they have to watch over everything. They have to make sure everything is in place and everything is working perfectly because they have the ability to fire people from their crew if they are not doing their job properly or if they don't make the deadline. The producer has control over all sections of the films production. They have to provide talent and put together a crew that can work together. The producer has the responsibility to come up with the idea for the production. The crew that the producer brings together include the director, production designer, cast members, pre production. The producer has to get permission for the locations and hire studios, he has to approve that the final shooting script is corrects, production schedule and the budget.
During our pre production process we go our actors to sign all documents that are required in order to have their face shown on camera. The actors was really prepared for the role because the took drama as a course, however when it was time to film the production we couldn't use the actors we picked because it was within the week and they were busy during the week, which was not a problem because they gave us early notice. Therefore we had to improvise and and decided to use two people within our group to act in our short film. This benefited us because of the fact we already knew our short film's story therefore we knew how to act it and how everything went. We had a day to reherse and we also has to re-take shots because of the lighting, but that was the only the first part of our short film.
Before we started proceeding with anything my group made use that everyone knew their role and that everyone knew what they had to cover, also the production manager made sure that everyone done what they was meant to do. During the pre-production and the production itself everyone took responsibility and done everything that they was able to do so we could meet the deadline.
All the equipment that we needed we was able to gather together. All except for the lighting pack, because our school ran out of lighting packs to give out but we managed to get a lighting before we finished out shoot. We had two extra spare batteries therefore if our cameras ran out of batteries we had spare to put in and also a charger to charge the dead batteries. We also had a tri pod and we also made sure that was working properly. Every time before we started shooting, we made sure that the camera had charged batteries and made sure that all of the equipment was working perfectly fine.
The call sheet was helpful because it had what times we should be at our locations, therefor because everyone knew what time to be at the locations everyone would be on time. Or if someone didn't know where the locations was or what it looked like there would be pictures of the exact location. The call sheet included the crew members details and emails, so it made it easier for us to contact each other and tell each other any information that was required.
Overall i believe the management of the production procedure was 95% sufficient because of the fact we met our deadline and we was organised with gathering together our equipment and all the things that was needed. The reason why it wouldn't be 100% because the pre production document wasn't as effective as it should be. Next time the storyboard will be completed with the rule of third the first time round, therefore i wouldn't have to go back and add it in.

Re submission - final proposal
Introduction
The purpose of this report is to self-off my pitch and to express the idea to producers to get the film made. From my research I can see horror short films don't the amount of views thriller short films receives. I also know that females watch horror/thriller movies more than men because they like the suspense and the build-up more than men do.
My short film idea
The name of my short film is called 'The demon within' and the genre of it is a horror.
It will be set up in the middle of the forest, where a man called Adrian killed his wife Shantelle and their child Nicholas and he buried them in the forest. The hook of my short film is the image in an unknown house. The twist at the end is that the neighbour possessed Adrian to kill his family because the neighbour was obsessed with Shantelle and their baby. Shantelle rejected the neighbour therefore the neighbour thought if he can't have her no one can, therefore he possessed Adrian to kill his family.
Hook: The image of the family
SAW influenced my idea because in the middle of this clip two men both wake up in place they don't know with their feet chained to and at the beginning of my short film the wife and her child have been tied back to back. The whole idea of the characters waking up in an unknown place is creepy within itself and being trapped by being chained to poles is intense, therefore I thought for my idea they could all be tied up not by chains but by ropes and they wake up in the middle of the forest. Also because it’s an open ending therefore it always leaves the audience in shock and with a cliff hanger. This also shows that my short film will have a twist at the end that surprises the audience. - The reason why I highlighted this is because it’s important that I add a twist to my short film because it's the trends and it's a good to leave the audience shock by a surprise. Because of this the short film will be more interesting because of the fact it will engage the audience's attention.
The Nightmare Elm Street inspired me as well at 3.25 because Freddie Kruger killed people for his revenge and the demon in my short film kills the teenagers to get revenge on them killing him. Also the fact that you can't actually see him killing her gives off a possessed effect which I added into my short film to add more suspense. This also proves that I will be having flashbacks of the teenagers killing the man before he became a demon. -The reason why I highlighted this is because it's important to add flash forwards or flashbacks to show that my short film is non-linear. Because of this the short film will be more interesting.
Final destination also influenced me because it had one person that could see what was going to happen a couple min into the future and that everyone is going to die. In my short film the wife has this ability and that will allow me to have flash forwards in my short film. - The reason why I highlighted this is because it's important to add flash forwards or flashbacks to show that my short film is non-linear. Because of this the short film will be more interesting

The BBFC would regulate my film a 15 or an 18 because my film reaches that standard. The
reason why my movie will be rated a 15 or 18 is because it contains everything you need for it.
My film will contain blood and gore, it will also include strong violence and strong horror. This
is the reason why it wouldn't be regulated at any regulation under 15 because it wouldn't be
suitable for that type of crowd such as U or 12. However some horror films can be shown at a 12
or 12a but the horror sequence can't be frequent and the short film can't be disturbing. In a U and
PG filming violence would be very mild.
Hook: The image of the family
Twist: The neighbour possessed Adrian to kill his wife and child
Influences
The article that influenced me to have this idea was the Aurther Simpson case. The man who buried his wife Sian Blake and their two children, Zachary and Amon. Aurther Simpson buried his wife and two children in their back garden. the way it influenced my idea is because my idea is a man who burys his wife and their child in thhe woods, however i added my own personal ideas to t as well.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3388579/Sian-Blake-s-sister-says-ex-EastEnders-actress-set-LEAVE-boyfriend-suspected-killing-appeals-brought-justice.html
A movie that influence me the most was SAW.
SAW influenced my idea because in the middle of this clip two men both wake up in place they don't know with their feet chained to and at the beginning of my short film the wife and her child have been tied back to back. Unique selling point
My unique selling point is that my idea is based on a real life situation. It's based on an article about a woman called Sian Blake her partner, Arthur Simpson killed her and her their two children, Zachary and Amon. The family was reported missing on 16th December 2015. Another unique selling point is that I have a possessed and an obsessed ability in one character.
Trends
I've noticed that the trends with a horror film is a twist at the end a good hook and a strong beginning. The reason why it has to have a strong beginning is because you have to capture the audience attention therefore they won't be bored and they will carry on watching. Also a twist at the end is to capture the audience and attention and surprise the audience therefore I’m putting a twist at the end of my short film.

This shows the box office of SAW. The reason why I picked this film is because it fits well with my idea to do with torture and to also show what will be expected in the box office if I was to show this in the cinema
Funding
Budget: The cost of my film will be approximately £50
• The transport and to provide food will cost £25
• Props and makeup will cost £25
• The cameras I will need will be provides by my college
•The equipment for the lighting will be provided by my college
•The facilities I will need to use such as; a mac to edit my short film, will be provided by my college
Kickstarter
This is another example of what Kickstarter funded. The short film is called love stinks and it's a comedy which has been shot in Canada and they funded 85% of it with $5,106. 46 backers and it has 24 days left.
This is an example of a short film that Kickstarter funded. The short film is called 'MNSTR'. The location is in New York and they funded 119% into it with $16,176 with 54 backers and only 3 days left.
And these are a few more examples. This proves that Kickstarter would help me with my short film.
Kickstarter would benefit me and my movie because it will help me take a step further on getting my film seen. Kickstarter doesn't just help film makers, they also help artists, musicians, designers and other creators to support their ideas.
'Kickstarter is an enormous global community built around creativity and creative projects. Over 10 million people, from every continent on earth, have backed a Kickstarter project.
Some of those projects come from influential artists like De La Soul or Marina Abramović. Most come from amazing creative people you probably haven’t heard of — from Grandma Pearl to indie filmmakers to the band down the street.
Every artist, filmmaker, designer, developer, and creator on Kickstarter has complete creative control over their work — and the opportunity to share it with a vibrant community of backers.
Distribution
My short film will be distributing or shown at a short film festival and it can also be shown on Netflix and YouTube.
The way I can get my movie onto Netflix is to try and get it onto Netflix database, because it's not possible to email someone who works for Netflix or within the company and ask. However if your movie isn't picked it wouldn't be able to go on the Netflix database. Netflix database is a long list of movies that Netflix chooses from for them to go on its homepage. The good chances of getting your film onto the the Netflix database is if you take of a distributor that has access to the important roads your need to go down, however it is really hard to do so. On the other hand it is possible to do. There is a distributors company which is owned by IndieGoGo that would help you to get your film seen on Netflix, but not just Netflix other services such as Distribber. The fee for Distribber is $1,600 however all the money that your movie makes you will receive 100% of it all and still have all your rights to your movie.
If you make it to the Netflix database you need to show that your independent movie is worthy therefore you need to create an army. The public need to queue in your movie by requesting it which is called queue demand. Therefore you would need to ask everyone to do this so your movie receives the most amount of requests. It depends on the amount of demands you get, the bigger the amount the more of a chance your film will be considered streaming through Netflix. Also to better your chances of getting your film on Netflix you need to have a wide press coverage and a good IMDB listing.
Also I could stream my short film onto YouTube. To do this you would have to make a YouTube account and be registered to YouTube. Then you would have to go on YouTube itself and click upload your movie has to be MPEG for you to upload it, therefore after filming and editing your movie you would have to save it as an MPEG file. To find out if the file is an MPEG you would have to check through properties and it should say if it is or isn't. After clicking upload you would click upload video, then browse your movie and upload it and your film will be online for everyone in the public to see, watch, like and comment about it.
Festivals
A short film festival is where distributes go to watch short films and see which is the best one. The short film that they are impressed with will get promoted in a particular area in the world and because of this the maker of that short film will achieve some reputation and praise and how creative they are.
The film festivals that my short horror film will be presented on are: Manchester film festival, can film festival, London film festival, Raindance film festival, Encounters international short film festival, Leeds international film festival, Aesthetics film festival at all these film festivals there will be distributes that will hopefully be impressed and then they would promote.
Raindance film festival
Raindance film festival is a film festival that show short films for distributors to choose. To submit my film to them I would have to call in to place an entry.
Raindance Film Festival is officially recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences USA, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts and the British Independent Film Awards. Selected shorts will qualify for Oscar® and BAFTA nominations. British short films that play in competition and all British features that play in 2016 will be eligible for entry for the 2016 British Independent Film Awards BIFA.

Film regulation
The BBFC won't regulate my web series as thy only regulate movies and cinematic shows and theatre shows. If the BBFC was to regulate my short film they would give it a (15)-(18). The reason why the BBFC will rate my short film and 15 - 18 is because the short film includes Strong violence, and strong language. The reason my short film will be allowed to be rated as a 15 is because there can be strong threat and horror as long as there is no sustained focus on sadistic or sexualised threat. The reason my short film can also be aged 18 is because it contains strong horror, strong blood and gore and sustain threat. From my research I’ve noticed that the audience that mostly watch thrillers is 18+ because the intensity will be to for young children because it could cause nightmares. Another reason why females enjoy horror movies more than men is because they love the story behind it. The statics are 36% of men under the age of 35 watch thrillers. 5% of women under the age of 35 watch thrillers and 65% over 35. This is why my web serial is aimed at people who are 18-35.
What might I see in a 15 rated film or video?
Any of the following:
· strong violence
· Frequent strong language (e.g. 'f***').
· portrayals of sexual activity
· strong verbal references to sex
· sexual nudity
· brief scenes of sexual violence or verbal references to sexual violence
· discriminatory language or behaviour
· drug taking
What sort of issues might I find in an 18 film or video?
18 works are for adults and can contain strong issues such as:
· very strong violence
· frequent strong language (e.g. 'f***') and / or very strong language (e.g. ‘c***’)
· strong portrayals of sexual activity
· scenes of sexual violence
· strong horror
· strong blood and gore
· real sex (in some circumstances)
· discriminatory language and behaviour
reason why my movie will be rated a 15 or 18 is because it contains everything you need for it.
My film will contain blood and gore, it will also include strong violence and strong horror. This
is the reason why it wouldn't be regulated at any regulation under 15 because it wouldn't be
suitable for that type of crowd such as U or 12. However some horror films can be shown at a 12

Also as I was watching the thriller short films I saw what the viewers liked to see more in thrillers therefore I took them into to consider to put into my short film. What I saw in the thrillers were some use of montage to not make it boring therefore it could make the audience think a bit. A lot of flash forwards and flashbacks to tell the story and to show what is going on in the movie.
I also saw that the trends were the Twists at the end because it surprises the audience and leaves the audience shocked, therefore I added a twist in my short horror film to shock the audience.
The gender who watches horror the most is women because they like the intense moments within the film and they like the jump scares.
Finance
Film producers get their finance through different ways. One of the ways is through their own savings; this benefits them in the long term if their film makes profit successfully. Another way is through investors investigating on a certain part of the money that needs to be paid back after being helpful to produce their movie. For my production I wouldn't need to provide a big amount of money because most of the materials that I will be using will be provided by my college. My only input in money wise would be to provide food for my actors and that will be paid with my personal savings. The transport is already established because I and my actors all have free travel oyster cards.

Budget Requirements: the costs to everything I will be needing for my web-serial will be below
Cameras - Are from £93.99 up to £32,549.46. I would have to purchase one camera as I’m using a single camera to shoot my web-serial. However in this case I will be booking a camera from my college for free.
Lights and microphone - £54.99-£183.64 for both lights and microphone. It would cost £500 per day to hire a camera man who would sometimes bring their equipment and sometimes not. In this case I wouldn't need to hire anyone because I will be shooting my web-serial myself, also there will be voice overs of my actors voices being recorded over the videos and I will be filming in daylight for most of my film and for the dark scenes will use a flash light to create more suspense.
Editing Suites - These suits can cost £500 per day/hour but in this case I will be using the editing suite that is provided in college.
Talent - to hire talent/talents will cost £500-700, however I will be using my colleagues who take drama as a course, because they will be more professional and they won't ask for any pay.
Crew - In order to hire a crew for a web series would usually cost more than £5, 100. For my web series we will be in a group of 6 and we will split the jobs between us.
Facility hire - the experience to rent an edit suit to have videos edited will cost around £550 per day. In this case I will be using the schools editing suit for free.

Time
This part of the media industry is very important, time and scheduling is everything in the media world. It's all important because you have deadlines to meet and if you don't meet the deadlines you would have to spend more money, For an example if you have booked a editing suit for 2 days which is £1,000 and your deadline was to finish editing the videos within those 2 days given but you haven't finished and you need an extra day you have to pay another £500 and then everything else will have to be pushed forward; different deadlines will have to be made and it will waste a good amount of time and money.
The most time I will be filming is on weekends as I am occupied within the week and so are my actors because we have college. Two - three weeks would be a good amount of filming and editing time considering we can get some done within the week in spare hours. The extra props my college wouldn't supply will be coming out of my personal savings but they will be at a cheap price.
Materials
Clearance is paying for copyrighted materials to used e.g. music tracks/ sounds. For every time a copyrighted material is shown on another show the owner of the material gets paid a certain amount of money in order for them to use their material, which ranges from £50 upwards depends on how much was negotiated. Because of the fact this is a college project we won't have to pay for the use of other sound track, however for my web serial my plan is to create my own original sounds due to the fact I and most people know how to use Logic Pro X. Also we have access to non-copyrighted sound from YouTube which is a free download and example of this will be below
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOrxwqvfD2E
In order that I have my equipment on time and to make sure I will get it I will book from advance.
Crew and personnel
The availability of personals I'm going to be doing this project with 2 or 3 other people so the roles of the production will split amongst us, for actors we will be gathering talents from our college and outside our college that also take a drama course. However in the real world auditions will be taken place to get actors and this will cost the production crew money as they will have to rent out a location in order for the auditions to take place.
The people I will be hiring will be listed below:
A camera man who will be in charge of the camera and responsible for the filming
Editor who will edit and put shot in order from the camera in to a story
Sound Engineer who will be in charge of the sound from the ambient sound to non-ambient sound
Director who will direct the whole plot and I will be the producer
Location
The atmosphere i would want my short film to be in is in the woods or a forest because my idea is based around it because he buried his family in that location.

The majority of our shots will be filmed in a local area, so around Sidcup/Kent and we will need a permit from the Kent council in order to film in particular places, when the weather is not suitable we have two options, we can either use the weather to set a mood in the series or film it in that condition and edit the footage to make it look better and clearer. The location of where we are going to shoot the footage won't be far from the crew member’s houses.
Most materials will be provided by my college but the rest will be coming out of my personal savings and will be booked of a booking company for a certain period of time. .
A short film festival is where distributors go to watch short films and see which the best one is. The short film that they are impressed with will get promoted I’m a particular area I’m the world and because of this the maker of that short film will achieve some reputation and praise on how creative they are.
Facilities
Production Equipment: equipment such as cameras, lights and other things can be booked for free form the college. But in a real life situation it will cost around £1000 to get a camera man alone cost around 500 pounds that's half of the money gone already therefore it's not cheap.
Post production equipment
Edit suite can be booked for £550 a day and this suites will contain macs which will run the software Final cut x which is the software that will be used to edit our shots. I will be using the editing suites in school as they have free access.
Evaluation
My film will be set in the forest, funded by kickstarter and promoted in the film festivals and youtube. The reason why i will promote my short film in the film festivals is because i want my film to be seen and distributed, also youtube is my back up because the audience on youtube is the whole world, which means anyone can see my short film. It will be promoted by kickstarter because it's the best funding site that actually helps your short film and gives it a good head start. It will be set in the forest because it is the best atmosphere because my film is revolved around the forest.
