Task 3b and 3c

VIVA Channel Idents


The theme of Viva suite of ident is 'Enjoy being young' because in every ident it shows a crowd of people who are playing parts of young people. The way the theme appeals to the target audience is because the target audience is a young age in their teens, leading into their 20's, therefore the actors in the ident are representing their target audience and doing what their target audience would do. The tone of all these idents are exciting and happy along with fun , which is representing that the channel causes exciting and fun programs and also the tone relates to the target audience, for an example at 0.42 when the actors are at a party having fun they are representing their young target audience when they attend parties. However the actors are slightly older than the target audience because the young will always look up to who is older than them therefore that is why young adults are playing this role in the idents.

They way VIVA has created a brand loyalty using the same theme is because in every ident they will have the same main colours which are illumines pink and illumines green, which are limitations. The reason why the colours are illumines is because it is meant to be bright and party colours to relate to the theme. Also the logo 'VIVA' is always pink or green, which is consistent. Also the logo always appears on screen on a strip; stating on what  program is going to be shown next. Another brand loyalty is that all the idents have the same tone, which is fun and excitement. The typography is a brand loyalty because it is the same typography throughout every ident.

The ident is entertainment led because it doesn't specifically show what the channel contains apart from the party side to it. The reason why it is entertainment led because it showing more visuals than the actual logo. For an example all of the 5 idents in this suit, they all contain a party scene or getting ready to go out and have fun scene.These adverts show at a particular tie of the day, which is the evening/night because these adverts are more based around parties and all the idents are at night, which links to the night clubs which their target audience would be attending.

Idents re-brand themselves when it a certain time of the year for an example when there is a special occasion in the year such as, Christmas, Halloween and Easter the idents will re-brand themselves to fit the occasion. VIVA in 2013 re-branded their channel when it was Christmas however they still kept to their brand loyalty by having the logo 'VIVA' pink and the ident was still entertainment led but they changed the entertainment by showing a house full of Christmas decorations and Christmas music showing televisions revealing the programs they have on VIVA channel such as Fresh Prince of Bel Air.


The channels brand identity is enjoyment because of the fact in the suit of idents all the actors are enjoying themselves and having a good time. The design of the suit is communicating to the target audience with the visuals perfectly because it showing what the channel contains to an non-visual audience. The visuals and the tone relate to the target audience because they are around the same age group as them and they relate to the actors because they have the same aspects as them. Also the tone reflects on the target audience because young teenagers want to have fun and excitement. The suit of idents is very effective because the typography is all in capitals and bold and illumines pink to stand out and be bright and exciting. The pace of all the idents are slow motion to represent that they don't want this time to end. The brand identity is very clear that it is enjoyment because every character is enjoying themselves in each ident and the density of information to show what the channel presents is very clear through the visuals.

Task 2b - Limitations

Colour 


Colour is extremely important, the reason why it is a limitation is because you have to be careful on what colour you have your log as because for an example you picked the colour pink people would naturally think that is BBC three because BBC three is pink. BBC is a very good example with colours because they have their own colour for each channel that they have. BBC one is red, BBC 2 is turquoise, BBC three is pink, BBC four is dark blue and BBC NEWS is burgundy. The reason being why that colour is a limitation is because if any other channel uses these colours it will confuse the audience because these channels have already branded themselves with these colours therefore this is restriction for other idents for other channels to use these colours.Another example of colour is on MTV Hits ident because the colour on the ident below is very bright to attract the audience attention.


Aspect Ratio
Aspect ratio is the width an the height of the ident. The main ratio now is 16:9 because that is everyone's everyday view and because most people in the modern era have wide HD TV screens therefore the 16:9 is perfect because it fits the whole ident on screen, whereas if you had a 4:3 ratio it would be too small and won't be able to fit all the information that is needed in the ident on screen because it would look like a small box. However 4:3 was perfect before the modern televisions were invented because before people use to have block TV's with a small screen, therefore the 4:3 didn't matter at the time. The reason why it is limitation is because it has to compete with other idents and show that they have the perfect ratio fitting their whole ident on screen without cutting anything out.



Typography
Typography is also very important because sometimes it has so much more meaning that the actual graphics. Typography contains the colour, style, font and size. Typography can be a limitation because it depends on what colour or style of text they use; they have to be really careful because it might look like another channels ident and that wouldn't be good for the marketing, brand loyalty and appealing to the audience because if you have and ident for a channel that has the tone of parody but the colour of that ident is burgundy and the same font and style like BBC news, you would be attracting the wrong target audience to your channel. An example of this is BBC three, the reason why the word 'three' is in lower case is because it is referring to the target audience. BBC three target audience is 16-34 years old therefore the lower case 'three' is relating to the younger side of the target audience and the type of programs they show that contains adult content targets the adult side of the target audience.


Resolution
Resolution is about the idents visuals becoming more appealing to the viewers and for the ident to becoming more up to date with the modern era because of the fact technology has improved and become more creative therefore the audiences want to see more creative and interesting things. The reason why resolutions are limitations is because it shows every detail that the ident has which could be time consuming and would take the focus that the audience has on the channel logo because they would be more interested in the graphics.


Size
Size is important especially with typography because you wouldn't want the logo to be to small and the graphics to be big because the audience will lose focus and focus more on the graphics. Also the viewers have to know what channel they are watching therefore if the size is too small they wont be able to recognise the channel therefore that is defeating appealing to the audience and consistency. However you dont want the size to be to big because if you want to add graphics in you wouldn't be able to because there will be no space. A good example of this would be nickelodeon because it's in 3D and it is clear enough for the target audience to see what channel is.

Task 2a - Opportunities

Creation of corporate identity 
In this advanced time and age TV stations are no longer limited to just a single nation. Therefore idents is there to help TV channels in different locations around the world. The idents are consistency through different channels for an example BBC one ident helps the channel to gain identity for itself and to gain audiences attention towards their online websites for an example BBC i player this is important because they have to gain identity for their channel on TV and online.

The ident is the channel's brand; having this is very important because it influences users to become and remain loyal to the channel, referring back to BBC it makes the audience become familiar with the logo therefore they will automatically know what channel it is, therefore the viewers are most likely to watch that channel again and become immune to it.


Creation of tone 
Creation of tone is the feeling of the ident and what feelings does the idents come across as to the target audience, where is parody, scary, terrifying, loving etc. This is very important because it refers to how the target audience feel about the ident and must be very clear otherwise the audience might become confused therefore the identity of the channel and the tone are both opportunities and they both have to be consistent. For an example the ident for ;sumo.com' is animation all the time, which is consistent throughout the suit of idents and the tone of the idents are parody because they want to make their target audience laugh.


Encouragement of brand loyalty 
Encouragement of brand loyalty is to do with the visuals that the target audience see, which has to be consistent therefore it reminds the target audience of your channel and makes them watch the channel frequently. An example of this is BBC one from 2002 - 2006. This ident was for BBC one for 4 years but the ident was interesting and creative because it included all the aspects that BBC one contain. Also all the clips of the actors doing different things were in slow motion to make the audience know and take in what their doing and so the ident is long enough until the voice over is finished.


Branding of content
An ident can focus on the information of the channel (the aspects of what the channel contains) of the visual (the graphics of the channel). Branding of content is the identity of a particular program on that channel which belongs to specific channel. So the ident uses that TV channel in their ident to promote it, therefore branding of content is revolved around marketing because using that program in the ident not just promotes the channel but it promotes the program itself as well. For an example BBC 5 main program that they promoted in their ident was Big Brother. In this ident tools form themselves together to form the Big Brother logo to promote that program individually and then changes into the BBC 5 logo to promote the channel.



Appeal to target audience
Appeal to target audience is another opportunity. Appealing to the target audience is important because by watching the ident the audience will know what the channel is about. An example of this is Cartoon Network. The reason why Cartoon Network appeals to their target audience is because in their idents they have the characters from different programs in it and it is very colorful and lively. Cartoon Network also has brand loyalty because 2:09  the ident speaks about adventure and inviting the audience in to go on an adventure with them. This reflects to the target audience because the audience is children, which are intrigued to go on adventures therefore they will watch that channel.

These are our sweet of idents, our theme is futuristic because in one of our idents there are speakers moving by themselves along with headphones, therefore that is a sign of the future because things are moving without anyone touching them (stop motion). The tone of idents are retro, excitement and unusual. The unusual links back to the speakers moving by themselves. The retro links to the colours and effects, reason why there is a lot of paint and colours is to link back to the target audience (12-15) because it relates to their childhoods. Our brand identity is speakers because in each one of our idents there is speakers to represent the base and the base refers back to the channel ( MTV Base). Older teens dancing tot he music in their own style refers back to ident 4 when the teenagers are dancing to the music. There all slow motion because its giving off the effects that they don't want this moment to end.
