Task 1B - Design and Purpose of Idennts report

  1. Design: density of information; space and time; screen tempo; interaction with viewers; information-led; entertainment-led

Purpose: identity; branding; marketing; packaging and re-packaging; scheduling; segmentation within scheduling
The purpose of an ident is to represent the channel they are promoting. The ident is what shows before a program starts to inform your what that channel's characteristics are and the type of channel it is. the purpose of and ident includes the marketing, the branding, brand loyalty, packaging and re-packaging and scheduling. All of these aspects is within the purpose of the ident; reasons on why the ident is there, which i will explain in more detail including examples.

The design of an ident is how it appeals to the audience, therefore it involves space and time, interaction with viewers, information led and entertainment led. All these aspects are within the design of the ident and the design has to suit their channel's target audience.

Pixar Ident
Pixar is a logo ident for Disney which is for children. The channel Disney contains children programs such as monster inc, That's so Raven etc therefore they made the ident more for children however it was simple. The ident is in 3D which is what they have upgraded because before it was 2D and the lamp hops in to the screen and bounces on the 'I' and replaces it. Then the screen goes dark leaving only the lamp shining. This related to children because they will always have a night lamp by there side when it's bedtime and they are trying to relate to them saying they should watch where they are most contented. The ident is 12 seconds long because you wouldn't want it to long because children will get bored and the pace was a normal pace within the camera but the movement of the lamp was fast pace.

SBTV Ident - (Information led & Identity)

SBTV Ident is to  represent their channel where they play music. The way the represent this in the ident is that its starts of with the logo on top the speaker and the shot moves and statics out when the base comes through, then it shows the logo on a microphone meanwhile you will see play signs flying around to show you should always keep playing. This ident is 14 seconds long the pace is quick and fast to represent the music and contains beat editing. colours are plain different shades of grey as speakers and microphones look like. The typography of the loco is different and slanted so it catches the audience eye and that it looks unusual to fit in with the type of genre hey play as well.

Information Led - Information led is the opposite to entertainment led. An ident either will focus more on the entertainment or focuses more on an specific purpose where as they will make the ident with less entertainment but more information on what the viewers are about to see. SBTV is an example of information led because it quite simple with having the logo on speakers or a microphone to give the audience information that this channel has beats and singing within it. Instead of having people perform or making beats they chose to give the information through the equipment.

Identity - Identity is showing what that channel is and who the channel is. SBTV used identity because in every shot they stated that it was 'SBTV' with the same typography, which will never change because that is their typography image.

MTV Hits Ident (Segmentation of scheduling, Space & Time, Entertainment led)

MTV Hits ident is to represent their channel, which is all about music. However MTV Hits have different genres of music and different type of artists on their channel and that is revealed withing their ident. The ident is very content and shows the different type of genres and artists, e.g. At 0.37 it shows that they have band artists on their channel because there if four animations singing and it also shows there is always a lead singer in the band because in the ident the lead singer enlarges. Another example is 0.48 shows that they have duets and hip hop music on their channel. The colours are very bright therefore it is eye catching to the audience, pace is normal not to slow but not to fast; you can see what is happening. The ident is 1 minute long which is longer than usual but that is why they have added a lot of eye catching aspects so the audience doesn't become bore but intrigued.

Entertainment led - Entertainment led is opposite to information led as explained on example two. MTV Hits is entertainment led because it focused more on the entertainment, interaction with audience more than the information. The animation didn't shape out as the logo MTV Hits but the logo was always in the left hand corner and always come to the middle at the end of the ident. They focused on entertainment because there is a lot of animation representing people singing and what type of music and singers are going to be on this channel.

Nickelodeon Ident - (Marketing, Interaction with viewers)

This particular Nickelodeon ident is perfect to show what re branding the channel is. Below is a normal Nickelodeon Ident which is a children's/ young teenager channel. The colours are very bright therefore it is eye catchy and the pace is quite fast. The ident shows different programs they show on Nickelodeon such as Spongebob Squarepants, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Kun Fu Panda etc. The ident is 35 seconds long which is short but just long enough to show the children what the channel has in store for them.

Marketing - Marketing is when your trying to advertise a particular product and sell it to their target audience. Nickelodeon uses marketing because it puts the faces of each character from different programs that are shown on that channel. They show different characters from Spongebob and Ninja turtles to sell the programs to the audience to make the audience want to watch it more now that they have seen their faces. This links to interaction with viewers because their reminding the audience about their favorite characters from different shows on Nickelodeon leaving the audience wanting more.

BBC One ident (Branding)
Branding - Branding is what identifies your channel to your target audience and they do this through their idents that represent their channel. The branding has to be eye catching to their target audience and unique therefore the viewers will remember that it's your channel. BBC One concept was circles and they are creative with it. For an example this ident has hippos swimming and forms a circle at the end with the logo of BBC one in the middle, which is always consistent about this channel; they will always form a circle at the end of the ident and have the logo in the middle, this is brand loyalty.

BBC Three ident (RE-Branding, Screen Tempo)
Re-branding - Re-branding means changing the whole appearance of the channel's ident to fit the characteristics that the channel has now. This could mean seasonal, for an example when it is Halloween or Christmas the idents will change to fit that aspect. Or the channel could re-brand to be up to date and to be more trendy. BBC Three re-branded their channel before the channel became instinct and moved onto online. The BBC Three logo used to be in all capitals and it use to be blue. Considering that BBC three has a young target audience they re-branded themselves and changed the capitals to lower case because that relates to a younger crowd that most likely wouldn't use capitals. Also the reason why they changed the background to pink is because the pink is more brighter than blue and makes the 'BBC three' stand out more.
BBC Three ident re-branded and in 2016 the ident was more creative; still with the colour pink with a grey background to make the pink stand out more. Their is animations to show what type of programs come on BBC three, such as entertainment and it also was showing that it was online as well; showing that you could listen to it on your iPad at 0.10.

Evaluation
From what I have researched every ident for different channels are different in their own unique way. For an example the typography on 'BBC One' is actual letters in the middle of the screen to inform the target audience on what channel they are watching, whereas 'BBC three' has letters for the 'BBC' itself but three blocks (rectangles) to represent the number 3. This shows creativity and also shows that typography is a limitation because everyone can have actual letters but BBC three used shapes and animation. Therefore the audience will know that their identity is different from the others.
However I've noticed that some idents don't really focus on the entertainment but more on the information that links with marketing. Such as SBTV, this channel has no animation or people moving in their ident, it just has the logo bouncing on speakers to show that there are amazing god base beats involved with this channel. Also showing the logo on the microphone to show it involves singing as well. This links back to identity because the logo is in every shot.
It is clear to me that idents are made for different purposes, where it's made for entertainment led to get their target audience to enjoy it more, or making more profit through marketing, or making their ident more trendy to fit in this day and time by re-packaging.
